“If you know anything about the deep southern soul of the 1960s, you’ll know that it’s truest examples weren’t made by Motown, Stax/Volt, or even the behemoth that is Atlantic Records. The deepest, smoothest cuts would appear on tiny labels promoting up-and-coming regional talent, burning bright and blessing the world with a collection of timeless hits, and then disappearing into the night as quick as they arrived. Often referred to as ‘journeymen’, blind singer and pianist Bobby Powell undoubtedly fits this mold. Effortlessly developing from humble gospel church singer to budding R&B superstar, Bobby provided us with a collection of timeless, underappreciated classics including ‘Spread Your Love’, ‘Sweet Sixteen’ and ‘All My Wordly Possessions’.
