Em 2001, Sufjan Stevens lançou, após seu álbum de estreia, a Sun Came, Enjoy Your Rabbit, uma série de quatorze instrumentais programaticamente inspirados pelos animais do zodíaco chinês. Muito depois, em 2006, Bryce Dessner (The National, compilação Dark Was the Night, Clogs) sugeriu que Sufjan reestruturasse a totalidade de Enjoy Your Rabbit para Osso, um quarteto de cordas que já havia contribuído com arranjos de cordas para Illinois de Sufjan e Bring Me the Workhorse da My Brightest Diamond. O resultado é Run Rabbit Run.
