Desde o lançamento de 2003 de seu terceiro álbum MICHIGAN e de 2004 SEVEN SWANS, Sufjan Stevens tem sido reconhecido como um dos mais talentosos compositores-performers da música independente. ILLINOIS, a continuação de MICHIGAN em seu projeto “50 States”, demonstra novamente sua habilidade de realizar uma visão musical por meio de suas músicas comoventes, musicalidade (ele toca 25 instrumentos no álbum), produção e arranjos.
