Raul Torres was a Puerto Rican musician working as a cane cutter in the Everglades of Florida in the late 1960s. In the early to mid-1970s he recorded two albums as an homage to the rural music of his homeland. An accomplished singer and guitarist, Torres had a wonderful feel for the traditional “jibaros,” the music of the working-class tenant farmers and fieldworkers, representing the cultural ideology and the pioneering spirit of the Puerto Rican people. The first album he recorded, “Yo Soy El Kikiriki,” recorded in 1974 stands as a wonderful example of that ethic. In 1975, Torres recorded the follow-up, “El Cantor Del Campo,” utilizing the talents of his sons, Efrain, Benjamin and Jaime on guitar accompaniment. The styles of music represented on the album include merengue, corrido, bolero, guaracha, pasadoble, guapango and guaracha-son. Exceedingly rare and hard to find in today’s vinyl market, “El Cantor Del Campo” is presented here loving remastered for this exclusive release and finally made available in the digital domain. .
