As renowned jazz producer John Hammond stated, the 1958 Pershing and Spotlight performances marked the turning point in Ahmad Jamal’s career, even though they were not the pianist’s first recordings. Scorned by the critics but worshiped by musicians and public alike, the Ahmad Jamal Trio was the biggest selling jazz group on records in 1958.
